Infinitly Imagined:

The gravitational orbit of any moon, planet, star or galaxy forms a helix, when you view it traveling through a time dimension.  A 3-dimensional helix is a ‘slice’ of the 4-dimensional shape of the orbit of a planet; Y is a time dimension, X and Z are space dimensions.  One 2D slice of a 3D helix is a circle, another is a wave.  One 3D slice of a 4D helix is a sphere; a planet in a specific moment of time.

Interesting patterns are revealed when you start thinking about the 4-dimensional shapes of objects through time.  One example I enjoy is the fractal nature of gravitational orbits.  Consider the 4D shape of the orbit of the Moon around the Earth through time; a helix.  The helix of the Moons orbit is ‘wrapped’ around the helical orbit of the Earth around the Sun.  The helices of the Earth and Moon are further ‘wrapped’ around the orbit of the Sun around the center of our Galaxy.  When Galaxies orbit each other another iteration is possible.  Because gravity causes the same behavior at different physical scales, a fractal pattern is generated.  Viewed from the ‘side’, with one space and one time dimension, orbits are fractal waves.  Viewed from the ‘top’ (two space dimensions) they are fractal circles.  A 3D slice in spacetime shows a helical fractal. The true 4D object is a fractal hyperhelix.

Another beautiful fractal in time is biology.  Every time A CELL DIVIDES it creates a bifurcation or a ‘branch’.  The same thing happens whenever an organism reproduces, or at each speciation event.  All life is part of the same 4-dimensional fractal tree, extending back in time to the moment of ABIOGENESIS.  When you consider your 4-dimensional shape it becomes clear that we are all part of the same fractal organism, wrapped on the spherical surface of a hyperhelix!

Forever Home

For the past year we have been fostering pit bulls awaiting adoption, their “forever home“.   My wife got us involved in this since she thought it would be a good transition after our beagle passed away.  Admittedly I was tentative about the breed since you read so much about pit bulls attacking children.  The dogs that we fostered have been very kind and attentive.  They are very affectionate, but they are pretty protective of their family.  We liked the Bruce, third dog that we fostered, so much that we decided to adopt him.

At the beginning of the year we decided to take on a foster in addition to the dog that we adopted.  Luna is an all white pit with the softest fur you have ever felt.  It was obvious that she had been abused and was used for breeding.  She was very skittish at loud noises and snapped at my wife once when she turned on the vacuum.  Despite that we decided to keep her in the hopes that she would adjust to a more steady family life.  She played well with our kids and dog, but whenever someone new came over she would get very defensive and growl.

In March both of the dogs escaped the yard and wandered the neighborhood.  I arrived home from work and the dogs were not there and neither was my family.  i knew that my wife was taking the kids to the park, so I assumed that she had taken the dogs as well.  Not too long after being home, someone comes to the door and tells me that both dogs are at his house.  I go and get them, but I left the front door open.  They go in the back door and immediately out the front.  I go chasing after them, and my heart is in a panic.  Bruce is fine, but I worry so much about Luna and how she reacts around others.  I round them up and while bringing them back to the house a neighbor tells me that Luna bit another dog.  I find out later that it is not that serious and nothing ever comes of it.

That incident was my breaking point with Luna.  I know she is a good dog and is just being protective of the family, but if we can’t get her aggression under control then we can no longer foster her.  Through the pit bull foundation we are able to get hooked up with a professional trainer that is semi-willing to take her for aggression training.  The training should last only one week, but that one week turns into two and then into three.  And that is where we are now.

The trainer and the pit bull foundation have decided that she is a threat and they cannot train her.  The decision is to put her to sleep.  This is a shame to me since we have never had to put a dog to sleep without it being old or sick.  However, at the same time I feel that her threat to a person is too great to risk.  We certainly cannot control her if a professional trainer cannot.

So she was put to sleep this morning.  My wife went to be with her.  I am glad that she was willing and able to do this.  She said that Luna was happy and was not aggressive at all during the process.  It is really sad since this is something that the animal could not control. She was bred to fight.  She was abused.  Nature and nurture were not on her side.

I feel that how we die is how we carry on to the next whatever.  My hope is that she was happy enough and caring enough for her to move on to something much better than the shit life card that she was dealt.  I believe in entropy.  Energy cannot be created or destroyed.  I wish for her positive energy to be gathered and manifested into a positive being and her negative to be evaporated into the arms of the universe to be reclaimed and renewed.

It is hard not to draw parallels to humans.  Are some people just born bad, the result of genetics gone haywire?  This has to be the case.  I guess the extreme of those that cannot control their actions do get put to sleep.  It seems horrible to say, but hopefully that is before they are able to pollute the gene pool.  But really, how responsible are we for our actions if this chemical soup of a brain is defective?  It almost seems like some huge genetic algorithm at play.  A few mutations are thrown in here and there and we go through a process of weeding out and selecting the best of breed.  Darwinism at its finest.

Whatever purpose Luna (or the rest of us play here), I hope that it is worth it.  If there is something checking the results of this experiment, I hope they get some valuable data.  Maybe we are the ones in charge of the scenario.  Maybe it is all random or we have been abandoned to our own recognizance.  Maybe the observed is the observer.  Maybe one day we will all go to our forever home.

Right Concentration

This morning I went with my friend to the lake to try out his new whitewater kayak.  We wanted to try it in a more controlled environment before attempting the river.  It was very deja vu-ish since we did the same thing when he got a flatwater yak.  He was the first to get a yak and we tried it at the same spot on the lake

A whitewater kayak handles differently than a recreational kayak.  It moves with your body.  you literally ratchet yourself into the cockpit and get a tight fit so that your knees are against the sides of the hull.  When you turn your hips, the kayak turns.  With a rec kayak, you sometimes paddle backwards to steer, but with a WW yak it is always forward. So steering can be troublesome at first because you want to do it all with the paddle, but you must make subtle hip adjustments or be able to completely keep your back straight.

He tried it first and just kept close ot the shore.  When I got in, I had to tighten it, so I don’t think he was in as much as he should have been.  I made a tight fit and after getting used to it with a few paddles and turns, I picked a spot on the other shore and started paddling.  When I thought about the paddling or my waist, then I spun around.  When I kept my concentration on the tree on the other shore, I tracked straight for it.  When my mind drifted or I started to think about the movements I needed to make then I spun around.  I tried to correct, but it was like once that concentration was lost, I was better to go with the flow and let things reset.  Spin around and pick the spot again and go for it with my whole intention.

So I have found kayaking to be very zen.  Lessons here apply to other areas in our life.  Every moment is a teaching moment and if in a moment we feel that we have messed up then we can spin around and reset our intentions and concentration.  We can pick up and achieve our goal.  And what will be remembered?  The faltering, the mistakes?  Maybe.  They did help us get to where we are, but the thing that should be treasured is the actual achievement of the goal.  The middle stuff is all whibbly wobbly timey whimy stuff.  The illusion of doing something in a dream.

It doesn’t matter what you do.  It doesn’t matter what choice you make.  What matters is that you do it with full intention, concentration and right mind.  I guess what I am saying is that maybe there is something to the eightfold path.

Do you think it is our choices or our feelings about our choices that matter?  Thoughts are turned into feelings which seed into the next thought.  My feelings about my past memories and future visions feed into the next thought which feeds into the next feeling.  And so on.


My feeling positive or negative in a given moment feeds itself into a positive or negative thought.  The thing to be aware of is that we are always feeling the past and not the current moment.  Feelings of the past supervene on the thought itself and they are not thought.  They are feelings.

Thought cannot be controlled.  Thought about the past occurs in the present.  Feelings about the past occur in the present.  With practice and patience, feelings can be controlled or at least understood.

All it Takes is a Little Patience and Time and Acceptance

My thoughts and anger seem to be consuming me this morning.  People not reacting how I think they should.  Feelings of inadequacy and worry.  I try to think positive.  I try to turn negative thoughts into positive ones.  I try to convert my feelings of I don’t want to feel this way into I want to feel this way.  Thoughts make feelings.  Scattered thoughts = scattered feelings.  I need to stabilize.  I need to make my thoughts even, in all situations turn “I don’t want” into “I want”.

It wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t feel like I was being punched in the throat every minute of the day.  I want to feel confident.  I want to get what I want.  I want to be myself.  I want to be knowledgeable, accepting, accepted.  I can continue to list my wants forever.  But them being wants still puts me in a position of wanting or lacking.  It is always a thought of not having or never having enough.

So what then?  How do I gain what I want without wanting it?  Pretend that I already have it?  If I put myself in a position of turning my wants into my haves then does the universe truly respond and give it to me?  What is required for this? Patience.  Acceptance.  There is a time delay.

Thoughts manifest themselves into physical reality on a timeframe.  Ask an artist.  A painting does not appear at a thought.  It takes effort and time to turn a mental thought into a physical representation.  Piece by piece, if I allow it, I can see and be the transformation.  The only limitation is my own thought and my own level of acceptance.  An artist lost in his work adjusts his thoughts to reality and reality to his thoughts bridging the gap until there is no distinction.  to an artist lost in his work, no time appears to have passed.

Intent and Action

I had a realization this morning that I habitually put things off until the very last minute.  I have an idea in my head, so no matter the deadline I always end up putting the same amount of time towards solving the problem.  This is not an issue per se unless the problem takes longer to solve than I allocated.  This approach assumes that all problems conform to my prior expectation without room for failure.  Luckily, I am pretty decent at estimating the time, but even when I am spot on, it still ends up feeling like a crunch.  I feel that this is ultimately limiting me and that I need to start when I start and not wait until the last minute to start.  I have known this before, but it seems a little more meaningful this morning.  If I start action at the start of intention instead of at the end that will allow me the time and freedom to tackle each problem with the amount of focus that it deserves.  So this is my intent and my action to follow through with this intent starts now.

Free Will vs. Control

101_0139 (Modified%20(2))If all action and thought spring from this exact moment, then we either have the total ability to modify our thoughts and actions, or we are just along for the ride.  If all possibilities are played out then we exist as one of those possibilities that is allowing the universe to examine itself and maybe take stock of where it is in the scheme of things.  A certain awareness through a certain lens.  So at the point of awareness in the current moment we realize that all possibilities have occurred to bring about this moment, and this moment represents all possibilities from this moment.

Through identification with the individual we assume that there is something to control.  With loss of identification and causality, there is nothing to control.  Free will comes, but it is not really needed.  Free will isn’t really freedom to make whatever choice you want.  That is irrelevant.  The true meaning is a freedom from desire or will.  Acceptance without want to change.

The more I find myself trying to control the moment, the more I realize that the control is not needed.  My attempts at control only end in disappointment when the goal is not met.  And I realize that this is because I am not self-realized.  Attempt at control is a want.  Release of control is true freedom from will.  It seems to be a balance.  Very odd.  Again, sort of the middle pane aspect of being caught in the middle.  Maybe I should start of a site of middle panes from different comic strips.

Awareness is for all times, not just when you are sitting with your eyes closed.  Do not mistake action for thought or thought for action.
